The short versionDigital products and education are allowed in every country with self-serve ChatGPT ads. Health coaching, diet and detox programs, and income promises are not. The best published results come from apps and digital products, such as Talkpal's 51% lower cost per trial. We found no published result from a course creator, coach or membership yet, so if you test now, you are early.
What you can advertise
- Allowed: digital products and education, workout programs that make no medical claims, finance courses that do not offer financial services, and legal education such as LSAT prep.
- Banned: health coaching, diet pills and detox programs.
- Banned in every category: ads that exaggerate results, use false endorsements or promise guaranteed financial returns. That rules out most income claims.
- No ads at all in conversations about mental or personal health, or where someone is leaning on ChatGPT emotionally.
- No ads for anyone under 18, so teen education is out.
What the results look like so far
- Talkpal, an AI language tutor app with a free trial: 26% higher return on ad spend than an established native ad channel, a 51% lower cost per trial, and a top 3 channel for new trials within 2 months. It ran campaigns by country and ad groups by learning goal.
- WeightWatchers: a cost per sale 15.3% below its paid search average, measured by DV Rockerbox. OpenAI did not say which product was advertised.
- LegalNature, digital legal documents sold one at a time or by subscription: about 40% of visitors started a document right away.
Those are published by OpenAI. The one creator result we found went the other way: an author promoting a book launch posted a cost of about $48 per registrant on ChatGPT against about $4 on Meta.
Education companies are among the regular advertisers. Education and training had 4.3% of US ChatGPT ad views from March to August 2026, from 414 advertisers led by Preply, and career services had 5.5%, led by Resume.io. When OtterlyAI ran a set of questions about learning platforms in July 2026, 81.6% of the answers carried an ad.
Where your offer can show up
In OpenAI's study of ChatGPT messages from mid-2024 to mid-2025, 10.2% were tutoring or teaching and 8.5% asked for how-to advice. Those are the conversations where a course, a program or a tool can be the next step. Talkpal chose ChatGPT because the people using it were already comfortable with AI, which suited an AI tutor.
The setup to start with
- Lead with a free or low first step. Talkpal led with a free trial, and LegalNature let visitors start a document straight away. A free lesson, a webinar registration or a trial gives you a conversion you can measure in days.
- Pick the right conversion event. ChatGPT has events for a registration, a trial start, a new subscription, a purchase and a lead. Choose the one your first step creates.
- Build one ad group per need, as Talkpal did by learning goal, with a landing page that answers the question the ad raises.
- Write plain, specific ads. Say what the person gets, who it is for and when it helps, in a title of up to 24 characters and a description of up to 48. Leave out income and results claims.
- Switch off creative enhancements if your copy has compliance lines. From October 29, 2026, OpenAI can rewrite your ad text and change your landing page unless you opt out.
- Ask your buyers. Add "ChatGPT or AI tools" to your "How did you hear about us?" question, so you can count buyers your tracking misses.
What to watch
- Low prices. At $3 to $5 a click, a $20 book or a $9 first month has very little room. The book launch above paid 12 times its Meta cost per registrant.
- Cheap intro offers attract people who cancel. One software company saw 25% of its ChatGPT signups use an intro coupon and cancel at once, against 4% normal churn. A membership with a cheap first month carries the same risk.
- Who sees the ads. Only people on the Free and Go plans see ads. Paying ChatGPT users never do.
Which offers should test first
- Good fit: practical skills people already ask ChatGPT about, such as languages, software and AI skills, exam prep, fitness programs and document templates, sold with a free trial or free first step.
- Weaker fit: health and mental-health coaching, money-making programs, and low-priced products with no follow-up offer.
Judge the test on the cost of a paying customer, not of a signup, because free-plan users can sign up for free offers and never pay.
