Software is the biggest category of ChatGPT ads in the US. Here is what the results show, why many B2B tests fail and the setup the published winners used.
B2B software had 19.9% of US ChatGPT ad views, the biggest share of any category, with Monday.com, Jotform and HubSpot among the top advertisers. OpenAI's case studies show strong results for Jotform and Stream, which both sell tools a person can sign up for and start using. Many public B2B tests got clicks and no customers, and people on paid ChatGPT plans, including company plans, never see ads.
OpenAI's 2 software stories:
Public tests split sharply. On the good side, the B2B agency InterTeam reported more than 150 qualified leads for 3 software clients at a cost per lead 60% below Google, and a hosting software company posted 128 conversions from $1,200 at $0.18 a click. On the bad side, Barn2, which sells WordPress plugins, spent $477 for 370 clicks and no sales, when its usual ChatGPT conversion rate pointed to about 5. A scraping API spent €3,274 for 39,779 clicks and no paying customers. Octolens spent €600 for about 200 clicks and no signups, while ChatGPT's free answers sent it 10 signups in the same 2 weeks.
Software founders on Reddit report both outcomes: some say ChatGPT converts better than Google at lower volume, others pay 2 to 3 times their Google cost per conversion.
In G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers, 51% said they start research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google, and 69% had picked a different vendor than planned after a chatbot's recommendation. Stream found developers' questions read less like keyword searches and more like working briefs. Graphite and Similarweb found that when someone names a brand in a question, ads from its competitors often appear. One founder on Reddit saw a competitor's "us vs them" page show 3 times as often as their own ad on their own brand name.
People on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans never see ads. Many of the people who use ChatGPT at work are on those plans, and B2B advertisers name this as the reason their tests failed. G2's survey does not say which plan its buyers use, and OpenAI publishes no share of paid users. The published wins point the same way: Jotform and Stream sell tools that a single person can find, sign up for and try.
Judge the test on cost per paying customer, next to Google and LinkedIn over the same weeks.
