Google Ads vs ChatGPT Ads

A Google click and a ChatGPT click cost about the same. What happens after the click is where they differ. Here is how the 2 compare.

By the Launch GPT Ads team · October 20, 2026

The short version

A US Google search click has a median price of $5.42. OpenAI suggests starting ChatGPT bids at $3 to $5. On the results published so far, Google turns far more of its clicks into leads and sales. ChatGPT reaches people while they are still asking questions, and Google now puts its own ads inside AI answers too.

Keywords against context hints

On Google you choose the searches. You bid on keywords, pick how closely a search must match them, and read a search terms report that shows what people typed, minus terms Google holds back for privacy. Google now pushes broad match with Smart Bidding, and AI Max can match searches with no keyword at all.

On ChatGPT there are no keywords to buy. You write context hints, plain sentences about what you sell, who it helps and when, and OpenAI matches your ad to the conversation. Your reports do not show the questions that triggered your ad. Some advertisers can add Negative Phrases to keep ads away from chats that mention certain words.

Clicks cost about the same, and Google converts more of them

WordStream's 2026 study of 13,474 US search campaigns, which mixes Google and Microsoft data, found a median of $5.42 per click, an 8.18% conversion rate and $66.69 per lead. Prices change a lot by industry: $9.87 per click for lawyers, $8.00 for dentists, $4.44 for clothing and jewelry, and $3.22 for real estate.

On ChatGPT, OpenAI suggests starting bids of $3 to $5, and 15 public campaigns billed in dollars had a median of $4.41. The PPC agency PPC ONE collected every published case where one advertiser ran Google and ChatGPT over the same weeks. Google had the higher conversion rate in all 4: 5.3% against 0.46%, 3.71% against 0.21%, 5.95% against 0.9%, and 6.64% against 0.8%. In another public test, one B2B advertiser spent $2,319 on ChatGPT for 739 clicks and no qualified leads, while Google brought 2 qualified leads at a higher price per click.

The better ChatGPT numbers come mostly from OpenAI and its partners. WeightWatchers' cost per sale from ChatGPT ads was 15.3% below its paid search average, measured by DV Rockerbox. Jotform reported a cost per signup about 30% below paid search. One agency founder told The Information that business software clicks cost about $5 on ChatGPT against $30 to $50 on Google. Treat all of these as early, because none of them is an independent test with matched budgets.

Google already puts ads inside AI answers

If you run Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns, your ads can already show above, below or inside Google's AI Overviews. Inside the answer, that covers English searches in 12 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia and India. You cannot switch it off, you cannot target it directly, and Google does not report it separately. In May 2026 Google also announced ads written by Gemini inside AI Mode answers, still in testing. SE Ranking found a text ad on 29.45% of 50,032 US commercial searches in AI Mode.

These AI answers take clicks away from the results under them, paid ads included. Seer Interactive measured the paid click-through rate on searches with an AI Overview falling from 19.70% to 6.34% between June 2024 and September 2025. Pew Research found that people clicked a result on 8% of visits that showed an AI summary, against 15% without one.

On ChatGPT the AI chat is the whole placement. You buy it on purpose, you see it in your reports, and you write ads for it. On Google it comes mixed into your search campaigns.

Budgets and billing

Both platforms treat your daily budget as an average. Google can spend up to 2 times it on a busy day and no more than 30.4 times it in a month. ChatGPT can spend up to 2 times it in a day and no more than 7 times it in a Sunday to Saturday week. ChatGPT's minimum is $25 a day in US dollars. Neither charges per sale. Google's Local Services Ads for home and storefront services are the exception that charges per lead.

Tracking and reporting

Google is years ahead here. Data-driven attribution is the default, Enhanced Conversions matches more sales with hashed customer data, clicks update every hour, and Target CPA bidding can start with no conversion history. ChatGPT has a pixel, a Conversions API and a Google Analytics 4 connection in beta. Spend shows about 7 to 8 hours late, conversions 24 to 48 hours late, and attribution is last touch.

Rules and review

Google reviews most ads within 1 business day and will eventually require every advertiser to verify. Health and finance ads need extra certification, and Google keeps them out of AI Overviews. ChatGPT's business verification can take up to 7 business days. Health, finance and legal ads are mostly limited to the US, and OpenAI bans several categories everywhere, including payday loans, debt relief and telehealth.

Which one fits your business

  • People search for you when they need you right now. An emergency plumber, a locksmith, a lawyer after an accident. The person types exactly what they need into Google, and in home services you can pay per lead with Local Services Ads.
  • People research before they buy. Products and services people compare and ask about first. ChatGPT ads show up while the person is still asking questions. In OpenAI's case studies, Newegg reported 3 times return on ad spend, and about 40% of LegalNature's visitors started a legal document as soon as they landed.
  • You sell software to businesses. Google converted better in every public same-advertiser test so far. ChatGPT clicks may cost much less in software, and B2B software is the largest category of ChatGPT ads in the US. People on paid ChatGPT plans never see ads, so check which plan your buyers use.
  • You sell products online. Google Shopping and Performance Max are proven. ChatGPT has product feed ads, which OpenAI calls among the strongest in its program, and a Shopify app for US stores.

If Google Ads already works for you

Keep it. Test ChatGPT with a separate budget and a separate set of ads. Graphite checked 10 advertisers and found that only 1.9% of their ChatGPT headlines matched one of their Google headlines exactly, so they write new ads for ChatGPT. Write for a person in the middle of a conversation, keep titles to 24 characters, and send each ad to the page about that one offer. Judge the test on what each lead or sale cost you, and compare it with your Google numbers from the same weeks.
