Facebook Ads vs ChatGPT Ads

Meta shows your ad to people who look like your buyers. ChatGPT shows it under an answer to a question about what you sell. Here is how the 2 compare.

By the Launch GPT Ads team · October 20, 2026

The short version

Meta is cheaper per click, has years of public benchmarks and the most complete tracking. ChatGPT puts your ad under an answer to a question about what you sell, needs very little creative, and is still in beta with no official benchmarks. If Meta already works for you, keep it running and test ChatGPT beside it.

Meta picks the person and ChatGPT picks the moment

On Facebook and Instagram your ad follows people. Meta looks at who they are and what they do on its apps and on your site, and finds more people like your buyers. In April 2025 Meta told advertisers that "the focus has shifted from niche targeting to creative diversification as the best lever." Your ads now do most of the targeting, because each different ad finds a different group of people.

On ChatGPT your ad follows the conversation. There are no interests and no lookalike audiences. You describe what you sell, who it helps and when it is useful, and OpenAI shows your ad below answers where that description fits. Graphite and Similarweb found that 51% of ChatGPT ad views happen in the first 3 messages of a chat, and that when someone names a brand in a question, ads from its competitors often appear.

That changes what you are buying. On Meta you catch someone who was scrolling. On ChatGPT you show up while someone is asking about the problem you solve.

What a click costs and what it brings

Meta clicks are cheaper. WordStream's 2026 study of 1,829 US campaigns found a median of $0.60 per click on traffic campaigns, $1.80 on lead campaigns and $27.39 per lead. Triple Whale puts the median Meta cost per 1,000 views for online stores at $15.06, for August 2025 to July 2026.

ChatGPT clicks cost more. OpenAI suggests starting at $3 to $5 a click, and 15 public campaigns billed in dollars had a median of $4.41. When we tested the bid meter in a euro account, bids from €2.00 up were rated likely to deliver.

The price of a click is only half the story. The numbers that decide it are your cost per sale and how many of the buyers are new to you. OpenAI's measurement partners published the first figures in October 2026. Fospha found that ChatGPT ads brought 83% more revenue per 1,000 views than the paid social average for the same advertisers. Triple Whale found that 93% of the visitors ChatGPT ads sent to Portland Leather Goods were new to the store. OpenAI published both, and both partners sell measurement, so treat them as early signals. Nobody has yet published a test that spends the same budget on both platforms and compares the cost per sale.

How much creative each one needs

Meta runs on volume. Its guidance asks for many ads with different themes, messages and visuals, and video for Reels and Stories. One brand Meta quoted went from 3 or 4 new ads a week to almost 50. Adding a new ad also restarts the learning phase of its ad set.

A ChatGPT ad is a square image, a title of up to 24 characters and a description of up to 48. Variety still helps. OpenAI says a varied set of ads lets the system find more conversations where one of them fits, and Graphite found that the 50 biggest ChatGPT advertisers run a median of 191 different ads each.

One setting needs your attention. From October 29, 2026, OpenAI turns on creative enhancements for every campaign. OpenAI can then rewrite your titles and descriptions, resize your images, change the page your ad links to and translate the ad, and these versions can run without you seeing them first. You can switch it off in Ads Manager. If your offer has compliance rules, or your landing page carries its own tracking, decide before that date.

Tracking and reporting

Meta has the deeper toolkit: its pixel, the Conversions API, lift tests, and attribution of 1 or 7 days after a click and 1 day after a view. It also changed twice in 2026. The 7 day and 28 day view windows left Meta's reporting API in January, and since late March only link clicks count as clicks for website sales.

ChatGPT has its own pixel and Conversions API, attribution of 7, 14 or 30 days after a click and 0 or 1 day after a view, and 10 attribution partners, including Triple Whale and Northbeam. Reporting is slower. Clicks show within about 15 minutes, spend runs about 7 to 8 hours behind, and conversions take 24 to 48 hours. Agencies told Digiday in October 2026 that gaps in conversion tracking are keeping their ChatGPT budgets at test level.

What each one lets you advertise

Meta allows more categories but limits how you target and track some of them. Since January 2025, US ads for financial products sit in a special category: no zip code targeting, a 15 mile minimum radius around a city, and age and gender left open. Housing and jobs follow the same rules. Websites that Meta files under health and wellness can lose the right to optimize for purchases.

ChatGPT closes some categories completely. OpenAI bans supplements sold outside major retail channels, health coaching, credit repair, debt relief, payday loans, job listings and individual home rentals or sales. Health, finance and legal ads are mostly limited to the US, with extra review.

Which one fits your business

  • You sell products online. Meta has catalog ads and Advantage+ sales campaigns built for stores. ChatGPT has product feed ads, which OpenAI calls among the strongest performers in its program, and a Shopify app for US stores. Newegg, an electronics retailer, reported 3 times return on ad spend from ChatGPT ads over 28 days in OpenAI's case study.
  • You run a local service. Meta gives you lead forms, call buttons and chat ads with radius targeting. ChatGPT lets you target cities and postal codes. Angi, a home services marketplace, cut its cost per lead by 34% after moving to ChatGPT conversion campaigns.
  • You sell courses or coaching. Education and instruction had the highest lead conversion rate in WordStream's 2026 Meta study, at 15.87%. ChatGPT allows digital products and education, and bans health coaching.
  • You sell software to businesses. Meta is the weakest of the big channels for B2B. Dreamdata measured a return on ad spend of 51% on Meta against 121% on LinkedIn. On ChatGPT, B2B software is the largest category of ad views in the US, at 19.9%. People on paid ChatGPT plans never see ads, and that includes Business and Enterprise seats.
  • You sell health or finance products outside the US. Meta lets you advertise with limits. ChatGPT mostly does not allow these ads outside the US yet.

If Meta already works for you

Keep it running. Test ChatGPT with money you can afford to spend on finding out. At the $25 daily minimum, one week can cost up to $175. Set up conversion tracking before the first ad goes live, send each ad to the page about that one offer, and judge the test on what each sale cost you.
