Your ad reaches people on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans. Anyone who pays for Plus or above never sees it.
Your ad can reach adults on ChatGPT's Free and Go plans, in the countries you choose. It never reaches Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts, anyone under 18, or anyone in a temporary chat.
This matters when you sell to people who pay for ChatGPT at work. Many software buyers do. If that is your buyer, a large part of your market sits on plans your ad cannot reach.
Your ad sits below ChatGPT's answer, with an "Ad" label. It shows your business name and logo, a title, a short description and a square image. A person can see one ad or several under the same answer.
OpenAI states that ads do not change the answer above them.
In October 2026, OpenAI listed 63 countries with self-serve access. The list includes the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, every country in the European Union, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, India, Brazil and Mexico. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan were added on September 23, 2026.
The company that pays for the ads has to be based in one of the available countries. A new account can often advertise only in its home country until its identity check is approved and it has spent enough there.
Personalized ads are switched off in the European Economic Area and in Switzerland. There, OpenAI matches your ad using the current conversation, plus the person's general location and language. Custom audiences are not available for those campaigns, so your context hints, your ad text and your landing page do all the matching.
OpenAI keeps ads out of sensitive conversations. The list includes personal and mental health, politics, self-harm, violence, hate, weapons and other regulated goods. If your product is mostly discussed in those conversations, your ad will have few places to show.
You get totals: views, clicks and conversions. You never get anyone's chats, chat history, memories, name, email, exact location or IP address.
People can also hide your ad, report it, ask why they are seeing it, and turn personalization off.
The audience is large. OpenAI says 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week, and research by Graphite and Similarweb found that 43% of the US users who can be shown ads had seen at least one by September 2026.
The audience is also everyday people on free and low-cost plans. OpenAI's published customer stories fit that picture: Angi sells home services, Newegg sells electronics, and LegalNature sells legal documents. If you sell to consumers or to local customers, your buyers are in this audience. If you sell only to large companies, check where your buyers use ChatGPT before you spend.
Based on OpenAI's own help pages, policies and customer stories as we read them in late September 2026. The platform changes most weeks, so check the current rules before you spend.
